Fixed Braces
The components of fixed braces consist of tiny brackets that are wired to each of your teeth. Over time, thicker wires are positioned and adjusted to create a slight strain that eventually straightens your teeth. Unlike typical metal braces, clear fixed braces cannot be taken out throughout your treatment. Metal brackets and wires are used in fixed braces to straighten teeth. During this procedure, the dentist will use a thin archwire to bind each tooth to a tiny, rectangular bracket on the front. With the help of this wire, your brackets and teeth will gradually align to their proper positions.
About Fixed Braces
Fixed braces, also known as traditional braces, are orthodontic devices used to straighten and align teeth. They consist of metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by wires that apply gradual pressure to move teeth into the desired position over time. Fixed braces are effective for correcting various dental issues, including crooked teeth, overcrowding, misalignment, and bite problems. There are two main types of fixed braces: Clear Fixed Braces and Ceramic Fixed Braces.
- Clear Fixed Braces: These use transparent or tooth-colored plastic brackets, making them less visible.
- Ceramic Fixed Braces: These use brackets made of ceramic material that closely matches the colour of natural teeth.
The treatment duration for fixed braces can range from 1 to 3 years, depending on the complexity of the case and the individual’s response to treatment.
Procedure for Fixed Braces
Consultation: The process starts with a consultation where the orthodontist evaluates your teeth, discusses your orthodontic concerns, and determines if fixed braces are the appropriate solution for you.
Treatment Planning: If fixed braces are recommended, the orthodontist will create a customized treatment plan based on your specific needs. This plan may include taking digital or physical impressions of your teeth, X-rays, and photographs to develop a comprehensive treatment strategy.
Bonding of Brackets: Once the plan is ready, the orthodontist will bond the brackets to your teeth. The process involves cleaning and drying the teeth, applying a sealant, and attaching the brackets using a special adhesive.
Placement of Archwires: After the brackets are secured, the orthodontist threads an archwire through the brackets. The wire is held in place with elastic bands or small ligatures. The archwire applies gentle pressure to gradually shift the teeth into alignment over time.
Adjustments: Throughout the treatment, you’ll need to visit the orthodontist regularly for adjustments. During these appointments, the orthodontist will tighten or replace the archwire and make any necessary modifications to the brackets to continue guiding the teeth toward their final position.
Monitoring Period: The orthodontist will closely monitor your progress to ensure the treatment is working as planned. The duration of treatment with fixed braces varies depending on individual needs, but it typically ranges from several months to a few years.
Retention: After the braces are removed, you’ll receive a retainer to maintain the new position of your teeth. Retainers are typically worn for a specified period to prevent the teeth from shifting back out of alignment.
