Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to treat polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and enhance ovulation in women facing fertility challenges. During the procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen to access the ovaries. Utilizing a laparoscope (a small camera) and specialized instruments, the surgeon punctures the ovarian tissue, which helps decrease the number of follicles and reduce androgen levels. This intervention can promote the resumption of regular ovulation, improving the chances of conception for women with PCOS.

About Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) is a surgical procedure aimed at treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. In women with PCOS, the ovaries often develop a thick outer layer and produce excess testosterone. High testosterone levels can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, acne, and increased body hair. Laparoscopic ovarian drilling addresses these issues by perforating the thick outer layer of the ovaries, which reduces testosterone production. This intervention can help restore regular ovulation and menstrual cycles, making it easier for women to conceive. Approximately 50% of women experience pregnancy within the first year following the procedure.

Procedure of Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling

Unlike fertility medications that must be taken monthly, ovarian drilling is a one-time treatment. The likelihood of multiple births, such as twins or triplets, is lower compared to fertility medications. However, the benefits of ovarian drilling may diminish over time, and ovulation and menstrual cycles could become irregular again.

The laparoscopic ovarian drilling procedure is minimally invasive. A thin, lighted instrument called a laparoscope is inserted through a small incision near the belly button. This device allows the surgeon to visualize the ovaries. Additional tiny incisions are made in the lower abdomen, through which specialized tools are inserted to create small holes in the ovarian tissue. This process aims to reduce testosterone production.

While ovarian drilling does not permanently resolve irregular periods and ovulation issues, it can enhance a woman’s response to fertility medications, improving her chances of conception.
